A ham lover's delight.
History of the ham rolls.
We have seen our share of ham rolls. At church events, parties and business meetings, but did you know how it originated? This famous side dish had its beginnings during the revolutionary war. General George Washington wanted to transfer some ham to his men, so they came up with the idea of rolling it up for easier transport. It was a quick meal used for Washington's army, especially for the battle of Trenton.
Commonly known as Pork rolls, it evolved in the 19th century with John Taylor. He took that idea to new heights and started the Taylor ham business, which is well-known to this day. In times past, ham was cured and very salty. In fact, the saltiness added some taste to it. Now, in this modern age, ham does not seem to have the flavor of times past, unless you go out to a state fair or a country cook out. The dirty little secret is that the vendors would add the extra salt to make you want to eat more ham, therefore increasing their profits.
More thoughts on the ham.
The ham is a versatile kind of meat. You can buy it, cook it and in some cases, it is already cooked. You can have some in your breakfast along with your eggs. On your sandwich, it can be added along with the cheese and other ingredients to have a great lunch. You can, even, have it roasted for dinner. Salads can, also, be made, if you want to eat light. One can get very creative with ham.
Coming from a Puerto Rican family, we used to have a Pernil (Pork Shoulder) for dinner. This delight-some meal was cooked during the Christmas holidays and it was a treat. Family members used to gather at the dinner table awaiting the arrival of the Pernil. It was a time for family to share some jokes and have some good fellowship with one another.
I realize that too much of a good thing is not good, especially when it comes to ham. My answer to that is to indulge yourself, at least once in a while. In this age of weight loss and eating right, it is not a bad thing to indulge once in a while and not feel guilty. If you want to eat light, ham rolls is the way to go. Once in a while, I like to sample a couple of ham rolls.
