Archie Comics-A fun comic to read!

I like Archie Comics, especially in the 60's and 70's because in part, it reminded me of my teenage years. When I brought a Archie comic book, my mom was next in line wanting to read it. My family, also, enjoyed reading the adventures of Archie. Now, mind you, I like drama and suspense and I have brought my share of DC/Marvel comics, but I like a little humor once in a while. Archie comics was, also, in my wide collection of comics. I really enjoy reading Archie comics!

Archie had a lot of interesting characters. My favorite character was Jughead Jones. All he thought about was food. I guess that is why I was so drawn to him. I, myself, in my younger years used to overindulge in food. He could be philosophical and was Archie's best friend. Having a hat that looked like a crown, he was just funny to look at.

I used to get a kick out of Reggie Mantle. He was so full of himself and had a crush on Midge Klump, Big Moose's girlfriend. The poor guy did not know when to quit and found himself getting clobbered by Big Moose. As a kid, I used to have a crush on both Betty and Veronica, but I liked Betty better. I used to feel sorry for Betty. She could be a tomboy, but was a beautiful girl, indeed, and really loved Archie. Veronica was born into royalty. The daughter of Hiram Lodge, she was so full of herself. Archie and Reggie would, constantly, compete for her love. If I was Archie, I would have picked Betty! (My personal opinion-Smile!)

Archie Andrews came on the scene in the year 1941. John L Goldwater created it, along with Vic Bloom and Bob Montana. Vic Bloom wrote the stories and Bob Montana did the artwork. It even had a radio serial called "THE ARCHIE ANDREWS RADIO SHOW!" Focusing on the life of a couple of teenagers, it centered around a school called Riverdale High.

As time passed by, each character got their own comic book. Then, they published Little Archie comic books! Archie comics, also, had its share of Superheroes. One that stood up was THE SHIELD! Did you know that this character was created 15 months before Captain America? DC comics now have the rights to this character and are now preparing a series with new plots. Not to be left behind, Archie Andrews had a brief stint as Pureheart-the Powerful!

Then the Archies came to TV in the 60's. Introducing a new character, they incorporated Hot Dog, Jughead's dog! They sung together as a group and even recorded the hit-SUGAR, SUGAR! I, personally, liked some of those cartoon adventures. The intro had a new beat to it with the words-EVERYTHING'S ARCHIE! (Video Link included)

One of the Archie cartoonist, Al Hartley, became a Born-again Christian. He wanted to include Archie and his characters to promote the gospel. Getting permission from John L Goldwater, he printed a couple of Archie stories. These stories were very effective. Mixing humor with real life situations, it brought to light the teachings of the Bible.

As the years passed by, we saw, even, more changes. Ms Grundy marries Waldo Weatherbee. Stricken by cancer, we witnessed her death adding a sense of realism. Then, more changes and some interesting turn of events! Archie Andrews gets married! There were two scenarios. In one, Archie marries Veronica and in another, he marries Betty. Jughead Jones marries Midge and you wonder what happened to Big Moose? There is, yet, another story in which Archie and Betty wind up as teachers in Riverdale high. So, as you can see, changes have come and gone! This, in itself, makes it interesting and deals with real life issues!

Archie Comics, no doubt, had gone through many a transition. I, personally,like the short funny stories, but I am old school. Comic books has gone through many changes and whether we agree with it or not, it, also, adds an interesting note-Comic characters are like people and they grow old. Sometimes they get killed as such was the case with the HUMAN TORCH from Marvel comics.

You can expect to see these changes on adventure and suspense comics, but Archie Comics had been revolutionary. I can say that Archie comics will be a part of American history, its characters reminding us of ourselves. This is what has made Archie comics a great comic book to read. Having this in mind, take some time and read a Archie comic book. It will bring laughter to your life and, maybe, remind you of your younger years!
