What is Snake Island? First, it is from the Spanish word Culebra, a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico. I, highly, recommend you make a trip to this fantastic island of the caribbean, where you can eat the best seafood it has to offer. THE HISTORY OF SNAKE ISLAND

When the Spanish colonized Puerto Rico, it started to focus its attention to Culebra. In 1875, they appointed a Black Englishman by the name of Stevens. He was given the authority to guard the coastal fishing industry. In 1880, they started to colonize the island and named it in honor of the Bishop of Toledo, Spain. A man by the name of Ildefonso de Culebra. During the Spanish American war, Spain lost Puerto Rico as well as Culebra. As the Americans took over, they had promised the Spanish Government by treaty to honor Culebra and its natural beauty,

A PROMISE BROKEN
But soon, that promise was broken and the US established a base there, forcing the people to move to other areas of the island. They practiced battle strategies and fired some shells around the island. Soon the people protested and the US moved from Culebra, but its beauty was a little marred by the shelling and the old tanks rusting away. Nevertheless, there is hope. Soon the government as well as the people beefed up its natural beauties. A sight to see is the beautiful mountains as well as its beaches, The water clear enough to see your toes.
